I messed up...

Today I was walking on the beach with my dog, Haiku. I insisted on walking with her so reluctantly, my Mom agreed. Of course, because I didn't know how to take control over Haiku, we ended up running for most of the way. She was very excited to see other dogs and would sprint after them but I managed to pull her away most of the time. The worst time was when she went after this boy on a scooter. She was so excited and I had to use all my strength to get her off of him.
I was as tired as she was when we finished and I waited for our family on a bench. While I was waiting, I noticed a sign that said a Crepe Truck, and I had been to that truck so I knew it was good. I suggested going there and my family said yes. I was still playing with Haiku or the grassy hills when our food was being made. I had an idea to go all the was to the top and run down. So both of us made our way up and I started to go down. I tugged on her harness a bit but she wouldn't come down. It wasn't until I turned around that I noticed what had happened.
Haiku was squirming around and then I saw what had happened. SHE HAD GOTTEN OUT OF HER HARNESS. I screamed to alert my parents and started to chase her around. Unfortunately, I was still on top of all of those darn hills and my parents were at the bottom. My Mom heard me and alerted my Dad. He ran up to assist me. Meanwhile, Haiku seemed to enjoy being off her leash and started running around. Some of the other people around the park were supporting us and shouted encouraging things. I would scream and leap to her every time she got close to the road but she always turned around to run back and forth again.
When my Dad came, I thought it would be too late. She had started jumping on this toddler and not knowing what to do, I started to tear up. I managed to spit out, please sit Haiku. Please! My Dad sat down and coaxed her over. She came to my Dad and peacefully sat down I started to cry hysterically. I kept thinking it was all my fault (cause it was) but I want to think of it as a learning moment. These were actually my thoughts as I ate my Nutella Crepe in the corner bench, trying to stay as far away from Haiku as I could. I'm actually really happy to learn from this experience and that's why Haiku is now sitting outside my bedroom door.
I think every dog owner goes through this experience atleast once! I’m glad you reflected on it and shared it with others so new dog owners can benefit from it!
I pulled my back once, because momo slipped off the harness and refused to come back. Totally my mistake and our house gate was open, he could have run out and been hit by a car. Very scary for me. It happens to all of us. Teaching moment.
😂. Probably not funny for you! But it happens to all new dog owners!
