I did quite enjoy this book. The story is written in verse which made it more challenging but I happily excepted it. It was my first time reading a book in poetic verse and I really loved it. The event this book refers to is when the African American community were not treated as equal and this book really highlights that.

This book really spotlights many issues and does it very distinctively. The main character is Jacqueline Woodson. She switches houses a lot but most of the time, she was with her Brothers Hope and Roman and Sister Odella. She also lives with her Grandmother and sometimes her Mother. Mostly her Mother is in NYC trying to give a better life to her kids.
Overall, I recommend this book for grades 5-7. I read this book for a book club but it would be a great read either way. I had to read some passages a couple times because it was a bit perplexing to solve the puzzle of the words but I think it is a fantastic book, and you should definitely read it.
This book was truly challenging but it was fun to read.
Oral history has been around for thousands of years and they have only lasted for so long because they were in verse. Before the written word was discovered humans have been telling stories in verse. It's really the best way to remember.
It’s great that you are challenging yourself to read different types of writing! I find it hard even now to push myself to read something different than what I know I will like. 👍
