My Review of The Book: The Boy on The Wooden Box

Updated: Nov 23, 2020

The Boy on The Wooden box is a fascinating read. It is a memoir about Leon Leyson who suffered through many perilous years facing World War 2 also known as the Holocaust.

I thought this read was tricky and was hard to imagine. At first, I actually thought that it was extremely boring. Nothing was going on whatsoever, however, I realized that it was just giving me information that was important later.

One man that helped the entire family was Oskar Schindler. Mr. Schindler had put Leon's name on a list sending him to infinite possibilities with his family! In the story, Leon and his family kept moving from one concentration camp to the next to the next.

Before I had read this book, I had no idea how much the Jewish folks had to deal with. Randomly, people were shot and as a 11 year old boy, Leon must have felt terrified by the outside world. Soon, the outside became inside when the Nazi's started invading homes.

I had always thought that at least the Nazi's would give decent food to the Jewish people. But no. Leon and his brothers, sister, mother and father were malnourished and were stuck digging through garbage cans to try to find even the smallest amount of food you could think of.

Potato skins and a quarter of bread is what they would feast on for an entire day. After reading this, I think that I have taken good food for granted. And this is one of the morals that I have learnt. Now I would never look at a small amount of food the same knowing that the portion that would seem small to me, would be the meal for the entire day for a extremely large family of 7.

The horrific tragedy was human beings at their absolute worst. I am glad you were able to read something about it.
